Lectures


Green Valley Recreation collaborates with several community organizations in order to provide a diverse assortment of educational and entertaining lectures. Topics cover health issues, southwestern culture, the humanities, and general interest. Dates and topics are subject to change.

Our Lecture Series is FREE and open to all GVR Members and the General Public!


1-7 Thursday: Green Valley Gardeners, East Center, coffee is on at 9am; lecture begins at 9:30am featuring Les Hayt, “Pruning Roses.”


1-7 Thursday: Arizona Public Media, Canoa Hills, 10am, American Masters: “Garrison Keillor” a PBS film capturing Keillor on and off stage. The film will be followed by a U of A School of Music group performing American folk music reminiscent of the Lake Wobegon band The Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band especially country, bluegrass, blues and gospel.


1-7 Thursday: Tucson Orthopaedic, East Center, 2pm, featuring Michail Vercillo, M.D., Orthopaedic Surgeon, “When Pain Stops Your Game – Overuse and Other Injuries---learn about common causes of shoulder, elbow and knee pain, non-surgical treatment options and the benefits of the latest surgical techniques.”


1-12 Tuesday: Saguaro National Park, Desert Hills Auditorium, 7pm, featuring Laura Olais, Bureau of Land Management, “History of the Empire Ranch.”

1-26 Tuesday: Saguaro National Park, Desert Hills Auditorium, 7pm, featuring Amy McCoy, PhD in Arid Lands Resource Sciences, “Tree Ring Research in Old Growth Trees along the Santa Cruz River.”


1-27 Wednesday: Whipple, West Center, 9am featuring Trevor Weekes, Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, “A Victorian Astronomical Whodunit.”

2-2 Tuesday: Saguaro National Park, Desert Hills Auditorium, 7pm, featuring Laura Olais, Bureau of Land Management, “San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.”


2-4 Thursday: Green Valley Gardeners, East Center, coffee is on at 9am; lecture begins at 9:30am featuring Russ Buhrow, Tohono Chul, “Penstemons.”


2-4 Thursday: Arizona Public Media, Canoa Hills, 10am, American Masters: “Zora Neale Hurston”. Authors and experts from the U of A and community will give their perspective on her work and influence in African American literature


2-4 Thursday: Arthritis Foundation, East Center, 2pm, featuring David Martin, Orthopedist, “Current Concepts in Joint Replacement in the Hip and Knee!” and 3pm, featuring Bridget Walsh D.O., Rheumatologist, Catalina Pointe Rheumatology, “Pain Management – Living Well with Arthritis Pain and Rheumatoid Arthritis!”
