STEPHANIE BETTMAN AND LUKE HALPIN – TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2012, 7:00PM, WEST SOCIAL CENTER - Stephanie Bettman and Luke Halpin we create uplifting original folk/bluegrass/Americana music. Our songs range from up tempo bluegrass to groovy jazzy acoustic pop to heart wrenching ballads with a focus on memorable lyrics, stunning musicianship, and beautiful vocal harmonies. The Karkowska Sisters have come back to Green Valley! Anna plays the most beautiful violin you will ever hear! Her talent has inspired many and has even led to her very own CD performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Kasha, a superbly talented pianist on her own, complements Anna as they play tunes you will recognize and some you have not heard before. "Femmes Fatales: Gypsy Nights" is an exciting evening of intense passion and vibrant musical energy that draws in the listener from the very first note. This unique blend of voice, violin and piano seduces audiences with the alluring combination of classical virtuosity and dramatic flair. Starting with the sultry Habañera from Bizet’s Carmen, Femmes Fatales explores the captivating figure of the gypsy woman through centuries of music. Mezzo-soprano Jami Tyzik guides the audience every step of the way on a journey around the world with intoxicating melodies from France, Spain, Germany, Argentina, and back home to Broadway. KATIA MORAES “PURE SAMBA” – THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 2012, 7:00PM, WEST SOCIAL CENTER - “PURE SAMBA” is a music show that presents old sambas by important Brazilian composers of the 20th Century. Songs by Cartola, Noel Rosa, Pixinguinha, Dorival Caymmi, Ary Barroso, Paulinho da Viola, Ernesto Nazareth, Chico Buarque, Caetano Veloso, João Bosco and Aldir Blanc, Gilberto Gil, and many others are performed interspersed with short stories about the composers. TUCSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (MASTERWORKS) – THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2012, 7:30PM, WEST SOCIAL CENTER, “Portraits of America”, George Hanson, conducting.
Stephen Seifert brings his mountain dulcimer back to the MasterWorks Series for the first time since 2008 to perform a newly-commissioned Conni Ellisor work on American Portraits, a program with additional music by Ives and Copland. Lee Lessack is returns to the Green Valley Stage as the Chantuer – a masterful new cabaret show offering a Francophile's journey through French (and French influenced) material, from Charles Aznavour and Michel Legrand, of course, to Broadway's Lerner and Loewe (C'est Moi) and Rodgers and Hammerstein (Dites-Moi). Along the way, he reveals both his own intimate connections to his choices and also illuminates it with fresh insights, too.
