Hummingbirds & Arizona History
Join Pleasurebent Tours and our expert birding guide as we explore Southern Arizona. We start the day at the Paton Center for Hummingbirds, in Patagonia. Visitors come from around the world to observe hummingbirds in a backyard made world-famous among birders by Wally and Marion Paton. Afterwards we visit The Empire Ranch, established in the 1860’s as a homestead ranch of 160 acres. After a tasty box lunch, we will travel to Fairbank, a ghost town along the San Pedro River established in 1881 which was so strategically located among the mines and forts and communities in the Arizona territory that it grew to 15,000 people before being slowly abandoned over decades in the 1900’s. We’ll end our day at Murray Springs Clovis Site near Sierra Vista – one of the Smithsonian’s ‘Great Clovis Sites’ – discovered in 1966 and excavated for four years. Prehistoric Paleo-Indians hunted large mammals here, such as mammoth, bison and early relatives of horses and camels.
